Soy

Researching artist and watching the way they work and talk about their work. Inspiring couple Art21 videos on Trenton Doyle and Janine Antoni. So then I started researching because nothing was coming to make except to continue with what I posted yesterday. After reading this, I don't think I ever want to eat soy again! Not that I cautiously eat it often but man have I been deceived and I thought I was smart. Keep in mind I am not a pro-soy person. I don't eat soy intentionally but it is an ingredient in some foods. Deceit, that is all we have.

Think about your food

So how often do you think you have been deceived? Think, just about everyday. People lie about the weather, your looks, food, and many more each and everyday why? To please someone? To satisfy the other side and leave them in the dark without knowing the truth.....these reasons can much more serious than this and become greed.

Our food industry is wack! Yup I  said it wack! USDA organic? think again. Major corporations see money in the food business and have bought out many of our (once was) organic farmers and producers of organic products. This is by far depressing. We see labels everyday that make us "understand" our food better but yet we dont even know the half of it. The list of products that are not organic that are added to organic produce raised from 77 to 250 within just a little over ten years. WHAT?!?! Why is this even necessary? People on the board are voting on these products that are not organic and made from chemicals to enter into what is certified as your organic meal. Wack I say! check out the article here: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/08/business/organic-food-purists-worry-about-big-companies-influence.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

Ok lets get off the rant....we get the idea. So what am I up to now? Good question. Still working with color and now thinking about how I can tie in the distribution, corporation, waste etc. of food into this fabric/swatch of color that I have been so interested in lately. So do these names ring a bell?

Naked?
General Mills?
Whole Foods?
Coca-Cola?

Lead manufacturers and contributors to some of this organic food dilemma we are having today. These business' care more for the money than the thought of organics for the people. Ill be working in a more contemporary photography way to build a background of ideas that represent this conflict in food industry today by photography and compiled backgrounds of these manufacturers logos. Then I will photographer, much like Albers, color on color with a close up lens and then print those as photographs . You might not be able to understand. I will do my best to get this ball rolling fast so I can get some images up but in the meantime you might have to wait because this will take some determination.

Vacation

Well….I took a vacation. Sorry I have not been around but it was much needed to detach myself from the work for a while and focus on me. Some things I did…

Biking 30+miles on Shenandoah Skyline Drive in Virginia with about 2,700 ft elevation gain and 20+ miles in Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. Beautiful.

Did Brew tours on the Brew Ridge…looking out at the Blue Ridge Parkway

and went to DC Botanical gardens and was really inspired by color and texture…

I meet with my mentor Lana tomorrow to discuss the past few weeks and my production. Its been a touch quarter this time around, trying to really find meaning to all this and gain come kind of clarification but I seem to be in a  small rut right now. It will all make sense in time. Stay tuned for the next assignments!

Hannafords and Collage?

Here are my hannafords tests for the rainbow. I also have about fifteen pieces of fabric getting ready to be sewed into a quilt based on the rainbow and where that rainbow came from. I also played around with photographing in blur because I thought…its more about the color and so why not try to break away from the subject. Take a look.

Got inspiration to play with this from the quilts of Gee's Bend. I went more with a triangular look though. Ill attempt more of these later and actually glue them down and have different colors in the future. This is an idea I just landed on today. Continuing this idea of patchwork in a different form other than the fabric.
here are the images I said I took with a blue. Almost as if to detach away from the idea of the food and focus on its color produced.

remember the colors do not reproduce well on this site.

Rainbow for Market Basket = $10.57

Rainbows……for Market Basket

Tired, long day. I am only posting pictures and hopefully in the next two days Ill get to writing something in depth on my thoughts and ideas that are flowing. I am on vacation soon and started to write my next paper….busy busy busy.

These are images of the colors of the rainbow taken of the fruit/vegetable that I chose when at this particular store to represent the six colors of the rainbow. Here is the results….. I also have dyed a piece of fabric for each one and will be making a "flag" or something of this matter for each store. I spent the night doing the same for Hannafords tonight and I will be photographing them tomorrow. I have some film that i have shot but I think that might be a little while away to getting developed…..

I'm sorry the colors are not completely correct…I can't get them to look the same on the blog.

These images were just posted the other day with no description. sorry about that my mind has been a little crazy these past weeks. One here is a color theory study inspired by Albers. The other two I am trying to think about the color and where we most recognize it. When i say green what do you think of? grass! Of course so I am trying to see what that does to the color whether it enhances it or not. This is a kale fabric (cotton) and sheet of coated paper on the grass. Those two are not edited. The other Albers style image is but the color is off.

Ok. SO the color is not totally being reproduced properly when I upload these files to Blogger. They are much lighter on the computer screen than what I am seeing here, please keep that in mind. I will be making some prints this week of these to show my mentor Lana next time we meet. This is the first run for the Albers inspired photographs. I am still working on the value scales and fabric dyeing. I have some amazing colors!!!! I added some images at the bottom of what to come…..

-fabric patchwork
-map of the world with prints on top….have to wait til it rains again to finish this piece
-more play on color, Albers style.

Run, rake, color….Albers

Sorry for the delay on the posts. Lots of things going on in life and art! Raking leaves that were left unfinished from the fall, getting back into my running routine and eating lots of carrots! So I met with Lana, my mentor, last Monday and had a wonderful discussion with her all about color! In my most recent studies I have been looking at this decay or deterioration of color of the organic matter I am using and seeing if it might be possible to relate both the longevity of the color to the nutritional value of the food. I am biased, I eat organic and buy mainly from a farm stand around the corner but I think this evidence also reveals the truth. The difficulty I have right now is being able to re-create another test of another matter such as beets, kale, etc. because the growing season is so limited still right now but the good news is that summer is right around the corner!!

So if you don't know Josef Albers, now you do. I will be making studies of color from inspiration of his color theory work. Check out his work here: http://albersfoundation.org

These are some quick images for the night but I will be photographing tomorrow with lights for a better image and most likely doing some color work as well with film, exciting!!! The color is not exact but I will have a better digital image tomorrow. Promise.

I will also be looking into making value scales based on what the naked eye can see for change within this color. I have produce to work with tomorrow for this idea. I will be sticking to the idea of the rainbow. Trying to represent the colors of the rainbow, a common color tool we all know, within the organic matter of its original state. I will also be continuing with the idea of the quilt and sewing and dyeing more fabrics to create another representation of the rainbow. Not much time to work this quarter of the semester so its going to be short of blogs and images but work is more upstairs (thinking and planning) process than the previous play work I had been doing. This is difficult for me to accept right now but I have faith the end product will be worth it. This journey has been grande so far and to think I have another whole year left still. Wow! One other task for this time period before my next meeting is to make a "map" of the world by one of the rain prints (or snow) I have been doing and then making the mono print on top of the print where that produce is most produced. Just an idea following the farmers almanac idea and wanted to pursue it.

Artists I will be looking at :
Bridget Riley
Albert Munsell
Josef Albers
Mary Reid Kelley
Mika Rottenberg

Goodnight! Its research time and its been a long Monday so far…..
