Little Free Write Session

Ok. SO this semester things seem to moving a little slower. I do think it is due to the fact that I am more methodical with my work. I plan and map things out before diving right into them like I did last semester. Now that I have my base down I am constantly creating a new form of action to take to get to a final piece. I am starting to think more about how these ideas relate to the thoughts I am currently pursuing…like food waste, constellations, and fermentation. I may be taking some time today to separate out my house to three separate areas where these studies can all take place. Although my house is not that big…..complications.

Here are some thoughts that came into my mind yesterday. I was supposed to meet my new mentor on Tuesday but unfortunately we had to push it back to this coming week, so I took the night off anyways and went to Boston to have dinner with my sister. It was great. Yesterday, after hearing about the snow storm, I ran all my errands to make sure I was all set to be locked inside my house for today. What did I need? I needed green string. Foam board. Fruits and Veggies. Ok, so I got the green yarn and foam board. As I was driving I thought, I am going to go to markets I have not been before to get my materials. So here was the beginning of this adventure…..

Market Basket:

Shocking. If I did drugs I would definitely want to be on them when walking into this market, what a mess! People were all over the place, babies, carriages, the entertainment was endless. It was about 545pm when I entered and I only stayed for maybe 15 minutes. While there, I walked the perimeter of the store, I did not dare enter an aisle. I saw different colored hair, under dressed women and men, heels, cologne, couples holding hands taking up the entire walkway. People were oblivious almost to themselves! I saw rows and rows of packaged meats, cookies, mass produced pastries, etc. All that kept speaking to me was the book Waste that I am reading in my resources tab. I could see it now and I thought……WHO THE HELL IS GOING TO EAT ALL THIS FOOD! I stood, staring off into space, in the middle of the market…dumfounded. How had this come to be? How had we come to refer to twinkles as a source of food not only for ourselves but for our kids? I couldn't help but stare at what other had inside their baskets and carts as I walked along with my Hershey Kiss reusable bag and a case of Sierra Nevada's Ruthless Rye that were on sale. Getting to the produce section I broke down nearly. Cartons of apples individually placed in each spot perfectly. Countless people passing by the mound of lemons, oranges, limes etc. How would all this citrus be used? I had to think quick because my mind was ready to explode. From the way you entered the store to the chaos that slapped you right in the face here I was standing in the aisle that I wanted to be and yet I couldn't remember why I came. I though quickly….green, citrus, berry, color. Ok, here we go! I ended up getting a cucumber, beets, carrots, blackberries, and a grapefruit. I watched people pick things up that didn't smell or look right and place them right back down. I watched people breeze by the fruits and veggies like they were nonexistent. How could all this food possibly be consumed before its time. I could not imagine. Packages of tomatoes wrapped in nine or twelve. It was madness. And where does it all come from. Ending up at the check out line I watched a young couple pull out boxes and boxes of pop tarts from their cart and then multiple boxes of mac and cheese. What a diet, how nutritious. What is it about the price that drives us to purchase what we do? So then I thought Ill go to a couple stores, buy the same thing and then see what the difference at each store is and compare the freshness of the produce and the price and what colors they give me. So I check out at $7.56 and moved on.

Bunny's Superette:

Driving to Bunny's, a local market that has been on the north end for years I thought how hard it would be for me to top that experience. I could of sat at the Market Basket for hours just watching people and studying what they were choosing to buy and how many of it. Bunny's is small and their produce section has a fair amount of cut meats from their meat department and a very small cooler of fruits and vegetables. I stuck with the same idea and tried to get the similar items. I purchased an individual wrapped red pepper(in place of beets), carrots (in a bag not a bunch), cucumber, strawberries(instead of blackberries) and an orange. I walked to the checkout line where there was a couple ahead of me buying a scratch ticket because Bunny's is the lucky hand in town. I had  a pleasant conversation with the woman who rung me up and then paid my tab a whole whopping $9.25 oh boy! a while two bucks more with a little less but no chaos and supporting local business. A selection that would not be able to please my appetite that is for sure. No one is getting overwhelmed at the amount of produce available here. Left in a fresh mood with a smile on my face. Onward……

Hannafords:

This is my stomping grounds. I go to Hannafords for most items unless its the the A Market on the other side of town. I again, grabbed the similar items; beets, strawberries, grapefruit, cucumber, and carrots. I left paying $9.70 after having been rung in by a woman I know from a past relationship. We reminisced a bit, her more than I, and I left happy to have seen her and send a message to her husband. She was always so sweet. I did not have any problems but I was looked at multiple times during my adventure here, more than the other two places. Not sure why….maybe it was all the green I was wearing or how calm my demeanor was considering I felt like I was at a riot earlier. Most expensive yet but I think this will be a short study for me so there will be more to compare price to.

I left content. Not how I wanted to spend a couple hours of my time but the experience was interesting. Think….how many places do you shop to get food? How many places can you shop to get food?

Hannafords, walmart, bunnys, market basket, target, a market, fresh market, natural choice market, farmers market, stop and shop, vistas, whole foods, etc. it goes ON AND ON AND ON! Where are they all getting their produce and is it all being consumed or is it being wasted? What is the different between the price and the quality or taste? What would happen if you tested all your foods….would you still eat them?

Ok so new mini works. I will study this idea…. Purchasing from different markets, eating it and taking notes on their taste, photographing them, individual and as a group, keeping the receipt, making prints from their juices. No waste. I will go start now…….this weekend or Monday I should have some work up, unless I get ambitious tonight after doing it all.

Stay tuned.

My video stopped short....very angry about it but I dont have enough storage on my phone to take long videos....should buy a tape recorder or whatever they are called. Here is the video of today.....Ill have some of the pictures up later this weekend.
