Meeting with Lana 2/25/14

Lana Z Caplan is my new mentor for this semester if I have not already stated that. Here is her web address.... you should check her work out.

I met with her on Monday and I have a list of things to do..... a long one and a short amount of time to do it. Starting this week I will be a mad woman to experiment and try to have some new and finished products for our next meeting in the next four weeks or so. I am excited, stressed, nervous, etc. This is a long and short journey all in the same.

I should have a good blog post by Thursday this coming week. Things will get started and planned tonight and tomorrow. I am being selfish and taking a mini vacation this weekend so I will not be as productive as I had hoped but I will be clearing my head to take it all on this next week!

Here are the bulleted and brief ideas that were spoken about during this meeting:
 Lana Z Caplan Meeting 2/25/14

Notes for ideas to focus on for the next four weeks:

  • Making a photogram on top of the exposed paper
  • Seal and coat the paper with rubber cement or some other sealant
  • Mask the images with saran wrap and fixative and then make a textured background like with snow so that the print does not get ruined
  • Make prints by coating the paper first and then dipping the fruit or vegetables in the juice of the paper before placing it on the paper.
  • make placemats for eating out of the dyed fabric prints.
  • If its about GMO then maybe digital prints are a proper way of showing these ideas because they are unnatural but if its about organic then making your own paper and prints and sealing the originals to show would be the process. or maybe its about both?
  • What about synthetic matter like chips and other packaged material that has color? what kind of color does that leave? maybe this coincides with the above idea?
  • documenting the cycle of time. does not have to be every day or every two weeks but when its documented that day is written down and marked. changes, time, smell, color, etc.
  • creating a legend? something that I could use to describe the taste, smell etc. in my notes with instead of writing everything out.
  • what happens when you study matter that is known to that season. snow- root vegetable rain-spring sprouts or something……
  • if its about food waste what is it about food waste that is so interesting. bullet ideas and on other concepts where it comes from, color etc.
  • -notes. take notes on the prints. make sure to document the whole process and experience
  • kitchen - cooking - feminism
  • pressing plants
  • wax pencil resist for notes…..
  • making the color for the product by fast of product. dilute the color if the taste is not full etc.
  • try food coloring? what happens then?
  • scan the materials on the flatbed. cut carrots, beets, cabbage in half and scan on flatbed and do it for canned or frozen and see if you can see the difference in the material - in regards to nutrients
  • notes! when - price - where - time
  • swatches idea! pursue! like paint swatches to describe the taste of each product by use of color for that product
  • make images with the color and the produce side by side and see if the produce and the color can relate. these would be photographs. halve a beet and show a beet next to a swatch of its own juice. is the color say as appealing as the fruit you see?
